The British Columbia Salmon Farmers Association (BCSFA) announced in December that it will invest $1.5M over the next five years to learn more about B.C.’s aquatic environment in general and wild salmon in particular.

BCSFA Executive Director, Jeremy Dunn, said in a press release “As active members of coastal communities, salmon farmers understand the importance of wild salmon to the economy and culture.”

The funding follows the completion of four priority setting workshops initiated in May 2013 and completed in December 2014.  The workshops addressed the 13 recommendations related to the industry from the Cohen Commission Final Report on the Inquiry into the Decline of Sockeye Salmon in the Fraser River.   There were 75 recommendation in total.

The BSCFA also announced an external Science Advisory Council was being formed to provide advice and make recommendations on BCSFA-led research over the next five years.
