Global Salmon Initiative announces tender for supplying omega-3 rich oil

At the recent AquaNor conference in Norway, the Global Salmon Initiative (GSI) and its industry feed partners announced the launch of a global tender to supply participating GSI members with a minimum of 25,000 tons of novel oil high in omega-3 and up to 200,000 tons annually for a minimum of two years. The purpose of the tender is to increase the availability of omega-3 rich oils and support the sustainable use of marine oils in fish feed.

According to the announcement, the farmed salmon industry uses approximately 350,000 tons of fish oil annually and this is expected to grow by approximately 5% each year, in line with industry growth.

GSI was established in 2013 and currently includes 14 companies – representing approximately 50% of the global salmon production industry – committed to providing a sustainable source of healthy food to feed a growing global population while minimizing their environmental footprint and continuing to improve their social contribution.

 “We are pleased to see the GSI members working proactively in the search for resources needed to ensure a sustainable future for the industry and to provide sustainable sources of protein,” said Doris Soto, Senior Aquaculture Officer at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

The deadline for proposal submission is October 31, 2015 and the GSI anticipates a decision by the end of 2015.
