Dr. Sonja Saksida, an Assistant Professor at the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), is a highly regarded veterinarian and epidemiologist, recognized both nationally and internationally as a leader in aquatic animal health. With over 30 years of experience in aquaculture, she has made significant contributions to research and policy development, enhancing the health of fish in Canada and worldwide.

Dr. Saksida earned her Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, and Master of Science in Veterinary Epidemiology from the University of Guelph. She distinguished herself as the Executive Director of the British Columbia Centre for Aquatic Health Sciences, where she played a key role in a major project aimed at restoring Coho salmon populations in the Campbell River. Her research on sea lice in both wild and farmed salmon has been highly regarded within the scientific community.

Throughout her career, Dr. Saksida has been dedicated to improving the health and welfare of both wild and farmed finfish. As Lead Veterinarian for Fisheries and Oceans Canada, she advanced the role of veterinarians in aquaculture, shifting their focus from solely providing primary healthcare to becoming more involved in husbandry, production, and welfare decisions.

At the AVC, Dr. Saksida continues her impactful work, including the development and administration of fish vaccines to prevent infectious diseases in salmon aquaculture. Her expertise has taken her to Norway, Thailand, New Zealand, and the Atlantic Provinces, where she has contributed to safeguarding aquatic health.

Dr. Saksida is also passionate about teaching, inspiring the next generation of veterinarians and introducing them to the diverse field of aquaculture, where their efforts contribute to maintaining the health of fish and waterways.
